I first noticed it on the piano
as your fingers danced across
the bone white keys and tugged
at the capillaries on my cheeks
and I felt my breath catch
in the clutch grip of my throat.
It was quiet then, a whisper
of a melody I swore I’d dampen
and you’d never hear, wet wool
blanket strewn over my blushing
cheeks and thundering heart.
Your fingers then lept, a grand jete
over onto my lap as the other continued
a symphony of my demise and the poor
wool incinerated at our touch.
It was no secret then, my disorderly
secrets stowed away under knitwork
and your shaking melodic tunes, it was
us then,
and it is us now.
